تسببت إصابة رجل إندونيسي بمرض نادر بتحوله إلى "شجرة"، حيث صار جسمه شبيهاً بالجذع، بنيما تحولت يديه إلى ما يشبه الفروع.
وكان ديد (35 عاماً) يعمل كصياد للأسماك، قبل مرضه الذي لا يصيب إلا واحداً من كل مليون شخص، إلا أن تحوله التدريجي إلى ما يشبه الشجرة تسبب بطرده من عمله، وهجر زوجته وولديه. واضطره ذلك للعمل في سيرك مقابل قوت يومه، حيث يظهر أمام الناس على أنه حالة نادرة.
ورغم أن بعض الأطباء المهتمين بدراسة حالته قاموا بإجراء جراحة لإزالة بعض هذه الزوائد الغريبة ومنابعها في جسده، إلا أنها عادت لتنمو من جديد، وبسرعة كبيرة.
واهتمت قناة "ديسكفري" الامريكية بحالته، وبثت تقريراً مفصلاً عنه، معربة عن أمنياتها بتبني أي طبيب أمريكي لحالته، وعلاجها مجاناً، وفق ما نقلت صحيفة "الراية" القطرية الأربعاء 21-11-2007.
من ناحيته، قام البروفسور انطوني جبسبري، من جامعة ميريلاند، بأخذ عينات من جسم ودم ديد، ليظهر أن الأخير يعاني من مشكلة جينية نادرة، ساعدت على زيادة حجم الاورام، ما جعل الفيروس يتمكن من خلايا جسده بالكامل.
ويرى دكتور أمريكي أخصائي في الجلد أن هناك أملا في علاج حالته فيما لو سمحت السلطات الإندونيسية بذلك، وحصل "الرجل الشجرة" على تأشيرة دخول للولايات المتحدة.
